Why does churn matter?

Since customer acquisition costs are usually high for subscription software companies, churn (in all its forms) is such an important health metric for SaaS businesses. It is not unusual for a vendor to not recoup its acquisition costs until several years into the contract. As a result, early turnover indicates that the company lost money on that particular customer. Similarly, understanding churn is necessary for understanding consumer lifetime value, which is another critical metric for SaaS companies.
